What is yoga


The traditional teachings of yoga are rooted in India and translated from Sanskrit means “unity”, “harmony”. The oldest references to yoga, as well as Ayurveda, are found in the scriptures of the Upanishads. And this is not surprising. After all, yoga was also conceived as part of Ayurveda to help Ayurvedic doctors during therapeutic measures and to prevent the development of the disease.

The first mention of yoga is given in the Rig Veda – the first and oldest of the four Vedas, and is used in the meaning of “harness”, “exercise”, “curb”, “connection”, “unity”, “connection”, “harmony”, “union “.


In the Hath Upanishad, an ancient text composed between 300 and 400 BC e., yoga is defined as a solid control of the organs of perception. The body is compared with a chariot, feelings with horses, and the mind with reins. The mind is a charioteer, and the soul is the master who rides on his chariot. If something is wrong with the chariot, horses, harness or charioteer, then not only the chariot and the charioteer will suffer from this, but also the owner of the chariot.

In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Raja Yoga, or the mind control yoga, is described. Patanjali gives the definition of the word yoga in the second sutra, which is the key sutra of the whole text: yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ (Yoga – curbing the unrest inherent in the mind).

According to the Paranjas, yoga is the control of changes in the modifications of the mind. Yoga is an ancient art based on knowledge of the body, mind and soul. Continued practice of yoga leads to a sense of peace and a sense of unity with everything that surrounds a practioner. The goal of yoga is to eliminate the chaos of conflicting thoughts and impulses. Our selfishness gives rise to prejudices, tendencies and various deviations, such as illness, laziness, doubt, indifference, thirst for sensual pleasures, etc., which lead us to inevitable suffering. Yoga allows you to get rid of all these shortcomings and discipline the mind.

Yoga is one of the so-called six classical schools (Darshan) of Indian philosophy. There are many forms of yoga, some of which have developed their own philosophy and practice system. Some focus on physical exercises (asanas), body postures and breathing techniques, while others focus on spiritual concentration and asceticism.


Thus, each person sees yoga in his own way, in accordance with his level of awareness and the program of life in which he lives. Nevertheless, yoga will be useful to everyone.

One of the main motor qualities of a person is associated with elasticity, muscles, ligaments, joint mobility. With age, flexibility is lost, which is more associated with aging processes. “As long as the spine is flexible, the person is young, but as soon as the flexibility disappears, the person becomes old,” say Indian yogis. And indeed, neither strength, nor endurance, nor speed decreases with age as much as flexibility. Regular yoga classes will help not only maintain flexibility, but also to a certain extent develop it at any age.

The difference between yoga and ordinary sports training is the conscious performance of movements and that it does not cause muscle cramps. Practice gradually lengthens the ligaments and tone the muscles, which play an important role in shaping a slender figure.

At the same time, our youth and beauty depend on the level of the latter.
